Sun City Girls

These san franciscans are probably one of the most unpredictable musical oddities out there. From their early punk tapes on to their "world music" explorations, you just never know exactly what you're going to get from one album tot he other (or from one song to the other)! And these guys have been at it for over twenty years, achieving cult status along the way (an understatement!). Their discography can be quite overwhelming at first and it is quite difficult to know where to start, but there are a few "essentials", but unfortunately most of these are out-of-print, very hard to find and usually go for huge sums on internet auction sites.

I have no idea why it took so long before I even heard of this group. It took a clerk from a store to make me listen to them in the store, otherwise they probably would have gone unnoticed still (which would be mind-baffling considering how I love strange and different music). He put on Valentines From Matahari a collection of noisy psych-tunes which just relentlessly picked at your brain. It was amazing, yet, for some reason, I didn't buy the CD. I purchased my first Sun City Girls CD over one year later when I found a used copy of one of their albums in a local music store at a decent price (all the others I want sell for astronomical sums and even though I would really like to have them, the opportunities to own them never show up with good timing). So for now, my collection of mp3s will do. Definitely more to come, but when? I have no clue!
