Six Organs Of Admittance's sophomore effort is definitely more folk-oriented than it's predecessor. The middle-eastern asian influences are more present than ever however and I hear a strong Incredible String Band influence on some tracks (Blue Sun Chiming for example) with it's use of unorthodox instruments and his vocal delivery. There are still a few moments of pure weirdness and/or moody atmospheres (Stone Finders Verse I and Sophia among others), but it's definitely more accessible than his first record. Chasny's masterful guitar playing takes center stage on most of the album and it's simply fantastic to hear how he can make the instrument sound so haunting (Journey Through Sankuan Pass is the record's dizzying highlight). The album was first released as a limited edition CD in 1999 on Pavillion and later re-released in 2001 with a slightly different artwork on Holy Mountain. |
