Back in the day, this was the very first Residents album I purchased (ie. could afford). Although I went on to prefer their earlier efforts, Gingerbread Man is easily one of their best later-era albums. Each song is about a different character, how each one of them ran after their hopes and dreams, but alas, life had different plans for them. It is thematically quite dark and enigmatic but balanced out by the playful nature of the music adds. Of course, some passages are simply creepy as hell, but what would a Residents album be without these? Gingerbread Man was also The Residents' second experiment with the CD-Rom format (albeit non-interactive) after Freak Show. In Australia, the album came with an amazing ten minute video medley of the album which has to be seen. Each song on the album starts off with the same nursery rhyme intro and then slowly makes it's way into the dark woods... and The Residents' Inferno. |
