Primal Scream try to emulate the aggressiveness of the infamous XTRMNTR, but fail. Yeah it's pretty intense at times, the beat is rapid, there's plenty of distortion, but the attitude is gone. I just don't feel it. When Deep Hit Of Morning Sun starts off, my first thoughts were that this was going to be some sort of Stereolab motorik record (Autobahn 66 and A Scanner Darkly give me that impression as well). Pretty good, just not very original. Other songs like Miss Lucifer and Detroit find the group concentrating on the electro-clash sound which was starting to emerge at the time. Rise is a fucking great song however, great bassline, pissed off attitude and plenty of feedback and noise to make sure you get the point (and if you don't, they'll shove it in your face until you get it, got it!? - Lovely!). Evil Heat, might not be as good as it's predecessor, but it definitely has it's moments and is worth checking out. |
