Omit
I have to thank a reader for turning me on to this obscure kiwi noise artist (I unfortunately can't remember your name, but if you read this, contact me and I will mention you up here). I rarely check out musical tips such as these as I prefer to find my own way through the massive realm of underground music. Even in this case it took me a while to actually listen to any of Omit's work, long enough to temporarily forget the artist name, but eventually, after a recent obsessive need for noise music, I fell upon a few downloadable albums on the net and decided to finally give it a try... Holy fuck! This is some of the bleakest, most detached and desolate noise I've ever heard and yet it is all so tastefully and artistically executed that it is impossible not to be blown away the artist's vision.
The artist in question is one Clinton Williams. Active since the late eighties and releasing a few handfuls of homemade tapes and lathe cuts throughout the nineties (all sporting Omit's wonderfully unique and often complex, retro-futuristic and alien artwork), his persistent unwillingness to promote his own works has kept him under the radar throughout his entire career, making him an obscure cult favorite enjoyed by only a selected few. This headstrong career choice is possibly explained by rumors of Williams being a misanthropic recluse who worked as a complete hermit for several years before his peculiar recordings eventually were noticed outside of his cave.
Using homemade electronic equipment, tons of effects pedals, field recordings and the odd instrument, Omit has created some of the most achingly beautiful, yet downcast sound worlds out there. His world often has that outsider art appeal where the odd presentation might seem bewildering at first, but upon closer inspection, reveals crystal clear human emotions of a soul crushed by the weight of the world. There is a powerful honesty in these somber soundscapes (think Jandek with a better grasp on mood) that I've rarely heard out there. Don't let yourselves be discouraged by the gritty and often hostile facade of this man's music, behind it all is an artistic vision unlike anything you've ever heard. One might hear a few influences in Williams' sound, Throbbing Gristle comes to mind, but how he twists and mangles these into a wholly new entity is incredibly fascinating to say the least.
