From this point on, The Necks' sound would slowly move into much more experimental territory. It would still be based in jazz, but the minimalist approach would be pushed to extremes at times (see Silent Night) and new bizarre sounds would infiltrate their music and blur the line between jazz, rock and minimalism. On Piano Bass Drums (never has a title been so descriptive of who a band is), the trio continue along the same lines as it's predecessor: repetitive and bare to the point of being practically nonexistent and eventually exploding into a barrage of piano notes and high hats. The album's only track (Unheard - why use a different title in this case?) sounds like a primitive blueprint for the trio's incredible Aether which they would release three years later. Fascinating, but not exceptional in their discography. Things start to become quite confusing (Sun Ra style) yet more engaging towards the middle mark. From this point on it's "lift off"!!! |
