The Necks reprise what they have done with Silent Night and offer us two albums for the price of one. I am unsure however if both pieces are related in some way; they sure as hell sound completely different. Mosquito is far from the irritating buzz and hyperactive jam I expected it to be. Instead, we get a fractured, extremely minimalist piece with spare moments of unidentified percussive instruments filling the silences between each monolithic bass note. The piano is the sole melody provider and although it does sound lovely at times, I feel the subtle changes in the piece are simply too rare not to lose focus on the piece (perhaps it's more interesting as an ambient piece?). See Through on the other hand sounds like a long lost Pharoah Sanders sessions with layers of exotic sounds and cloudy atmospherics. Alone, this makes the album a worthwhile purchase. There's a long stretch of silence eleven minutes into the song for some reason. |
