Along with Next, this soundtrack to the 1999 australian film The Boys is the only time The Necks would create relatively short tracks. I haven't seen the film and I'm not too anxious about seeing it either, but if it's as mysterious and chilling as the music that was created for it, then it must be a masterpiece. This is the first album, chronologically speaking, that truly hit me like a ton of bricks. Although short these tracks manage to build up incredibly creepy atmospheres. It's also the first time I hear the trio include so many outside sounds in addition to the usual piano, bass and drums. There are no weak tracks to be found, but some numbers stand out particularly; like the three part theme song and the disorienting Headlights with it's eccentric organ melody and kooky electronics. Fife And Drums sounds also quite outlandish with it's doom metal (practically) intro, definitely an exceptional number in The Necks' discography.
