Mirror
Mirror is the dark ambient duo of Andrew Chalk and Christoph Heeman. Together, they create some of the most mysterious and thrilling soundscapes I've ever heard. Imagine yourselves Thomas Köner's glacial sonic worlds but with a much organic and vibrant aura. Somehow they manage to make you feel as if you were standing out in the open air, in a different setting for every song (a large field, the forest, the city, etc.), and every natural sound or noise that reaches your ears, whether it be the distant highway, the rain, a sudden gust of wind, or the few animals creeping and crawling around you, turn into musical entities which ultimately shape up into slow yet harmonious melodies. I'm not sure it's intentional, but I would go as far as saying that the duo are trying to mirror the sounds of our daily lives and letting us observe and hear all of it's magical sonic capabilities. It's rarely cheerful and buoyant, but there's a distinct beauty hiding behind these long compositions.
The only reason why I haven't started collecting music by Mirror earlier is the exorbitant prices these recordings go for. I've rarely seen their albums go for under thirty bucks. True, each vinyl and sometimes CD comes in a beautiful and elaborate packaging which is often hand-made and I'm not saying the music isn't worth the price of admission, but only the lucky few with a steady paycheck will probably be able to enjoy these sounds. As if it were only meant for a certain musical elite. If I wouldn't have fallen in love with Chalk's solo work, I probably would have delayed my Mirror purchases for even longer, but being hungry for more material by this artist, it was the logical thing to do. I'll have to go slowly, but I plan on finding all of Mirror's releases. Yes! Even those that have hefty price tags on them. I'm telling you it's worth it!
