Along with Bullhead, this is probably The Melvins' most important record. It came out when the Seattle grunge scene was the latest craze and with the help of rising star and friend Kurt Cobain (who also features on the record), Houdini managed to turn The Melvins practically into a household name. They were even distributed on a major now! But The Melvins were never interested in huge commercial success or being "hip". Although there were similarities between the grunge scene's sound and Houdini, it remains incredibly heavy for the time and packs in enough attitude and weirdness to dumbfound the new "fans". The non-sensical lyrics must be heard to be believed. For those who enjoy their Melvins at their heaviest and most aggressive, then this is an absolute must-have. Hooch, Night Goat (my all-time favorite Melvins track), Honey Bucket and the monolithic, two-chord Joan Of Arc are just a few of the many highlights on this killer record.
