Ulf Lohmann
I might have owned hundreds of IDM and various electronica albums at one point in my life, including many from the Kompakt label which was always high on my priority list, but surprisingly, I never bought anything by Ulf Lohmann. True, the many has only ever released one full length album, but this is surprising considering how much I love his many contributions to Kompakt's amazing Pop Ambient series. Lohmann's work perfectly embodies the series' intention, in fact the name describes his music perfectly. Other artists from the series, like Markus Guentner and Dettinger, also have a similar sound, but no one else incorporates the "pop" element into their compositions as well as subtly Lohmann does.
I got my first taste of his work on the very first installment of Pop Ambient, the song Because is to this day my favorite composition on these compilations so far. His music is as dreamy as dreamy can be, yet there is an obvious effort not to fall into the cheesy new age mold. It's these subtle psychedelic and/or experimental touches that make him stand out from his peers. A decade has nearly passed since his album was released and to this day, I still cross my fingers in the hopes that he will one day release new material.
