Daikan literally translates to "major cold" in a few east asian nations. It is a period, according to their calendar (approximately in late January for us), when the Sun is at a specific angle in relation to Earth which would account for the coldest period of the year. Their calendar also states that the year is divided into 24 seasonal shifts and I like to believe that Köner respects this in his composition with all it's slowly fading drones and rumbles. There is not much else going on besides this throughout the piece, yet it remains absolutely hypnotizing and awe-inspiring. I remember listening to this the first time and sitting there, enraptured by the mysterious sounds for the entirety of the piece; jumping with every blast of low frequencies, getting caressed by the steadily swelling drones and being engulfed by the shadowy yet intoxicating melody which comes and goes like a ghost towards the end of the piece. This is quite an unforgettable experience!
