I Woke Up is a refreshing album after the last few releases. There is still quite a bit of delay, but many more instruments are involved here. Harmonica, accordion and drums all show up. But what's more interesting is the way Jandek's voice comes through. His voice is a lot lower than usual and more often than not, it sounds like he's talking rather then singing. First Awake Moment sounds like an attempt at beat poetry over his usual musical background. Get Back Inside is a great little number that is similar to what Fursaxa does on the harmonium and Pending Doom sounds like nothing in the artist's registry. Sleepless Night is also quite interesting and psychedelic. Without a doubt one of the better mid-period Jandek albums. Worth checking out. It's all over the place and breaks away from the direction he had taken with albums like Twelfth Apostle and Glad To Get Away.
