Jandek's sixth acts as a companion piece to Living In A Moon So Blue (and not just because of the cover). The weird plucking makes it's return here, but in general, this is just like it's predecessor without any extras. Whispered vocals, stream-of-consciousness lyrics, zero tact; but that's all a part of Jandek's charm. This was never meant to be a fun listen. The songs often sound the same from one to the other. There are no discernible structures within the songs either: they usually end on the same tone they started with. What's remarkable with this "system" is that when a song sounds just remotely different, it has an almost dramatic effect on the listener. Out of the murky waters that is most of the album comes a moment of pure excitement. Sand I is a case in point on this particular album. It really sticks out from the rest and single-handedly makes the whole album worthy of closer inspection. |
