What a mess! Even by Jandek's standards. And I'm not just speaking of the cover of the album either. The way this album was recorded is really confusing. The guitar sounds very loud on the right channel, the drums are barely audible in the background and then his voice is heard mostly on the left channel and it is quite distorted. But all of this is quite charming in it's own strange way. There's some great blues on Message To The Clerk and Give It A Name sounds quite a bit like early Captain Beefheart. This album also contains one of my absolute favorite Jandek tunes, the sweet and gentle I'll Sit Alone And Think A Lot About You, which, in respect to the rest of the album, is recorded way too low (probably to avoid more of the feedback which surfaces here and there). In fact, the vocals inexplicably switch from the left to the right channel on the last three tracks! Go figure! |
