Modern Dances starts off with a bang with Painted My Teeth, which is some sort of reference to a similarly titled song on Telegraph Melts. It's a great duo with Nancy where both start raving about if the other painted his teeth or not. For the last couple of albums, Jandek seems to have a fondness for screaming at the top of his lungs and he sounds very menacing at times (check out Twelve Minutes). Far from being as riff oriented as Follow Your Footsteps, it's closer in spirit to Foreign and Telegraph. Nancy is still present on many of the songs. The use of a delay pedal on the last three tracks (which are also played on the acoustic guitar) create a very haunting atmosphere with it's very strange background sounds and rhythm. Another good album in what seems to be Jandek's strongest period. |
