Davenport
Out of the tranquil American midwest, led by one Clay Ruby, comes the enigmatic Davenport. Exploding back in 2004 with an impressive amount of material released on many different labels, the collective brought upon the world their brand of free form folk music. Like a quieter NNCK based entirely within the acoustic realm, the Davenport Family have created some of the most primal, most tribal music this side of the Paleolithic era. I've known about the band for ages and remember seeing tons of releases available back when I was discovering the genre, came close to buying a few on many occasions, but as with many other bands, just didn't have the heart to start collecting their work out of the fear of getting financially ruined (seeing as some of it was incredibly rare and expensive - think early MV+EE). Flash forward a few years, the band's release schedule has died down considerably and I've almost completely forgot about their existence. Out of the blue, after ordering the latest slab of weirdness by Sunburned Hand Of The Man on Three Lobed Recordings, I receive one of Davenport's limited CDs as a bonus and my curiosity is rekindled. I don't know when I will be getting any more of their albums, but more will definitely pop up as I find them. Free-fractured folk music has never sounded this good. Like a cromagnon tribe inexplicably crossed with early appalachian folk musicians, Davenport's sound will certainly confuse and amuse.
