Black Dice

National Flag

It's about fucking time I got some Black Dice into my collection. I swear to God I've come this close to buying their albums on countless occasions, but somehow something else always became a priority. I've even been following their work since their major change in sound from grind metal sonic explorers to weirdo electronic noisicians. Flash forward nearly ten years when I'm in downtown Montreal during one of my many impulse shopping sprees and I find used copies of two of their albums: Cold Hands and Beaches & Canyons. Not having bought any of their work for so long, I wasn't in such a hurry to get these either, but for some reason (mostly due to my compulsive buying reflex - aka CBR) I grabbed them and threw them into the pile while the cashier was punching up the total for my purchases. And so here we are, the collection has started, the rest will eventually follow with time.

Is it just me or is Black Dice's career practically identical to similar artists Growing. Both come from the metal scene and both eventually completely changed their sound towards a more experimental electronic spectrum. Black Dice's early albums have more in common with the grind metal blasts of Napalm Death and the whole Relapse records roster at the beginning of the decade. What made them change their sound so drastically is a mystery, but it certainly did help them make a bigger name for themselves. Signs of their metal past still can surface on some songs even today, but Black Dice is a whole new beast today. Constantly noisy, there is always something quite colorful about their work even when it is at it's most abstract and unrestrained. As brutal as their music can sometimes be (they have collaborated on more than a few occasions with noise masters Wolf Eyes if this can give you an idea), there's always a rainbow towering above our heads as we explore their sound world.
