Being my first ever exposure to the sound world of Ashtray Navigations, I must say this was a pleasant surprise. After the critical success of 1997's Four Raga Moods, the band have come up with this second volume of extended psychedelic jams. With a title like History Of Psychedelia, you know what you are in for, and this short piece is a great introduction to this mind-expanding album. Hey Sunflower Motherfucker sounds like a long lost Vibracathedral Orchestra tune recorded somewhere in the stratosphere. There is something unearthly about these tunes which will make you forget you are listening to man-made music. Even a louder track like The Pete Nolan Effect is a haunting drone composition which is as good as anything Natural Snow Buildings have ever released. And The Profit And The Loss is reminiscent of the soundtrack to Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain and at "only" twenty minutes long, you'll be begging for more once it's over! |
