Ashtray Navigations
Ashtray Navigations have been around for as long as I can remember, yet it took a small ordering error for me to get one of the band's albums as a bonus and finally get to hear them for the first time. I've been familiar with the name for over ten years now, seeing them mentioned along the great underground english outfits like The Vibracathedral Orchestra, Richard Youngs and even Sunroof!, but here is another case of a band being so incredibly productive that it scared me away from investigating, fearing that I might just like it and have to start hunting down everything at a price. And of course, there are no surprises here. Ashtray Navigations are some of the best purveyors of psychedelic soundscapes and avant-garde rock forms from the UK (or anywhere else for that matter). If you are fans of the aforementioned bands than you need to check this band out much earlier than I have. You'll thank me later
Ashtray Navigations began in 1991 as a psych-noise project by one Phil Todd, but with time, a group was formed around the name which went on to include many single sessions guests. Drummer Alex Neilson went on to make a name for himself for his own solo work and for being the first drummer to accompany famous texan recluse Jandek for his legendary first live outing. The whole "Ash Nav" sound is quite difficult to pinpoint as each album from their incredibly vast discography is practically unique. One album can be a psychedelic raga/drone session, while the next is a weirdo-beardo folk mind fuck. Sometimes haunting and beautiful, sometimes disconcerting, one thing is for sure, every album is a new surprise. I'm certainly hooked now, but fearing for my budget, I'll try and slowly fill in the gaps with time.
